Does Your Maryland Family Have An Emergency Kit?

Smart residents prepare for emergencies, and parents of young children in the Silver Spring area should be aware of the special nature of preparing their families for emergencies.

Since the health and safety of all family members is important, everyone’s needs should be taken into account when preparing emergency provisions.

AAP Immunization Information For Hyattsville Parents In the past century, the rates of many serious diseases in the United States have significantly declined, in some cases, they have been virtually eradicated.

Many Hyattsville people have never met a person with measles, polio, small pox, rubella, tetanus, or diphtheria; though these diseases killed thousands of Maryland children in past generations.

One of the main reasons many dangerous communicable childhood diseases have been minimized in our area is due to Silver Spring children’s immunizations. The increase in immunization use has gone a long way to improve health in our Maryland communities.

Recently, I have noticed that many Hyattsville parents are questioning the children’s immunization schedule. I came across an informative American Academy of Pediatrics FAQ sheet that addresses most of the common concerns.

Health Benefits of Silver Spring Dirt!

Most Silver Spring parents know about the health benefits of gardening as a family: spending time outdoors, working together, establishing a connection to the food we eat, better nutrition, and many more.

Something not so well known in Silver Spring is that the dirt itself contains beneficial bacteria that can aid in depression, cognitive functioning, and even in fighting some cancers.

The mice that ingested the bacteria ran the maze twice as fast and exhibited half as many stress behaviors as the mice that didn’t have the bacteria.

Think of Silver Spring kids in the ‘good ole’ days,’ running around on unpaved roads, playing in meadows, forests, and dirt piles, and half of the time probably bare-foot. It is quite a different childhood than the sanitized version that exists in our society today. Children not only need more time out-of-doors, but they need to get dirty! Let your Silver Spring neighbors hear you yell: ‘Kids, go outside and get dirty!’

Individual vs. Team Sports For Silver Spring Kids

There are growing numbers of kids in the Silver Spring area involved in team sports. Participating in these activities can be a very positive experience for Silver Spring kids. They can enhance health and fitness, social maturity, and even cognitive development.

What if your child doesn’t want to participate in organized team sports in your Maryland community? Perhaps they have yet to develop the skills necessary or find team sports too competitive or intimidating.

Fortunately, Silver Spring children who participate in individual sports or even simple playful activities can receive the same benefits. With a team, the child has a coach to guide and encourage them in the chosen sport. Absent the team and coach, the guidance can come from the active role parents play in their child’s chosen sport.
